  在物理學的這種頗為平靜的狀態中,突然闖進瞭量子論和狹義相對論,自然科學的基礎移動瞭,開始是緩慢的,後來漸漸加快。第一次激烈的討論是圍繞著相對論提齣的空間和時間問題展開的。人們應當怎樣談論新的狀況呢,人們應當把運動體的洛倫茲收縮看作是真實的收縮,還是把它僅僅看作是一種錶現的收縮呢?人們應當說時間空間結構是真正不同於過去所假設的那樣呢,還是人們隻應當說實驗結果能在數學上以這種方式對應於這種新的結構,而作為我們麵前事物存在的普遍和必要形式的時間空間仍保持它們過去一貫具有的樣子,這許多爭論後麵的真實問題是這樣一個事實,就是人們沒有可用來前後一緻地談論新狀況的語言。日常的語言是以舊的時間空間概念為基礎的,這種語言過去提供瞭關於測量的部署和測量的結果的唯一無歧義的傳達信息的方法。但是實驗已經錶明,舊的概念不能到處適用。

  在其他也需要比較準確的定義的科學中,例如在法學中,情況多少有點相象。但這裏判斷的鏈條中環的數目不需要很大,因而不需要完全的準確性,用日常語言作齣的比較準確的定義就足夠瞭。
