　　月光下，叶子上躺着一颗小小的蛋。
　　星期天早上，太阳升起来，“砰！”从蛋里爬出来一条又小又饿的毛毛虫。
　　他开始去找吃的。星期一吃了一个苹果，可还是好饿。星期二吃了两个梨子，可还是好饿。星期三吃了三个李子，可还是好饿。星期四吃了四个草莓，可还是好饿。星期五吃了五个橘子，可还是好饿。星期六，他吃了一块巧克力蛋糕、一个冰淇淋、一根黄瓜、一块乳酪、一条火腿、一根棒棒糖、一个樱桃派、一根香肠、一个杯子蛋糕和一片西瓜。那天晚上，毛毛虫肚子痛了。
　　第二天又是星期天。毛毛虫吃了绿叶子，肚子好多了。
　　现在，他不饿了，不是一条小毛毛虫了，是一条又肥又大的毛毛虫了。他造了一个小房子，叫茧，把自己包在了里面。他在里面呆了两个多星期，咬了一个小洞挤了出来。
　　毛毛虫变成了一只漂亮的蝴蝶。

作者简介

Eric Carle is the author and illustrator of more than seventy books for children, many of them bestsellers. Born in Syracuse, New York, he moved to Germany with his parents when he was six years old. He studied at the Academy of Graphic Arts in Stuttgart before returning to the United States, where he worked as a graphic designer for The New York Times and later as art director for an international advertising agency. His first two books, 1,2,3 to the Zoo and The Very Hungry Caterpillar, gained him immediate international recognition. The latter title, now considered a modern classic, has sold more than 30 million copies and has been translated into forty-eight languages. Eric Carle and his wife, Barbara, divide their time between the mountains of North Carolina and the Florida Keys.

　　艾瑞·卡尔，1929年出生于纽约，1935年随父母返德国定居。艾瑞·卡尔讨厌德国式的教育，教育下的学校生活及时代的战乱，让他的少年时光并不快乐。战后，从小就展露绘画天分且向往自由浪漫的艾瑞·卡尔，在中学绘画老师的推荐及母亲的鼓励下，进入斯图加特艺术学院学习了四年的商业设计，一毕业即在时尚杂志担任艺术总监。1952年，艾瑞·卡尔再次踏上他要实现梦想的土地——美国。因缘巧合，艾瑞·卡尔得到李欧·李奥尼的赏识和推荐，顺利开始他在《纽约时报》的工作，发挥美术兼广告设计的长才。1960年成立了个人工作室，辛勤工作之外，他更渴望蜕变、渴望创作！
　　1967年，艾瑞·卡尔首次有机会为孩子的书配上插画，这次充满乐趣、大胆发挥创意的过程，让他感觉畅快淋漓，他日后走向为儿童创作图画书的道路。他年近40才开始创作图画书，迄今为止，已经创作了《棕色的熊、棕色的熊，你在看什么？》、《好饿的毛毛虫》、《海马先生》、《爸爸，我要月亮》等70多本色彩缤纷、富含想象力的拼贴画风格的图画书，被翻译成了多种语言，小读者遍布世界各地，并荣获多项世界著名儿童图画书奖。他笔下那条著名的毛毛虫，已被翻译成近50种语言版本，销量突破3300万，风行世界40余年。

A caterpillar hatches out of his egg and is very hungry. On his first day, he eats through one piece of food; on his second, two, and so on. Little holes cut in the pages allow toddlers to wiggle their fingers through the food, just like the caterpillar. Vivid and colorful illustrations and ingenious layered pages help preschoolers learn the days of the week, how to count, and how a caterpillar turns into a butterfly. In the light of the moon a little egg lay on a leaf. One Sunday morning the warm sun came up and-pop!-out of the egg came a tiny and very hungry caterpillar. He started to look for some food. On Monday he ate through one apple. But he was still hungry. He started to look for some food. On Tuesday he ate through two pears, but he was still hungry. He started to look for some food. On Wednesday he ate through three plums, but he was still hungry. He started to look for some food. On Thursday he ate through four strawberries, but he was still hungry. On Friday he ate through five oranges, but he was still hungry. On Saturday he ate through one piece of chocolate cake, one ice-cream cone, one pickle, one slice of Swiss cheese, one slice of salami, one lollipop, one piece of cherry pie, one sausage, one cupcake, and one slice of watermelon. That night he had a stomachache! The next day was Sunday again. The caterpillar ate through one nice green leaf, and after that he felt much better. Now he wasn't hungry any more-and he wasn't a little caterpillar any more. He was a big, fat caterpillar. He built a small house, called a cocoon, around himself. He stayed inside for more than two weeks. Then he nibbled a hole in the cocoon, pushedhis way out and ... he was a beautiful butterfly! ...
