“欲生菩薩傢，欲得童真地，欲得不離諸佛者，當學般若波羅蜜。欲以諸善根供養諸佛，恭敬尊重贊嘆隨意成就，當學般若波羅蜜。欲滿一切眾生所願：飲食、衣服、臥具、塗香、車乘、房捨、床榻、燈燭等，當學般若波羅蜜。”（錄自《摩訶鉢羅若波羅蜜經抄·序品第一》）“頗有一智知一切法乎？頗有一識識一切法乎？頗有二心展轉相因乎？頗有二心展轉相緣乎？以何等故一人前後二心不俱生乎？若人不可得亦無前心而就後心，以何等故憶本所作？以何等故憶識強記？以何等故憶而不憶？以何等故祭祀餓鬼則得，祭餘處不得？”（錄自《阿毗曇·雜犍度智跋渠第二》）這種經文何等文從字順，其中固有譯者之功，然道安之勞亦不可忽視。事實上，道安製定的原則在大多數情況下都得到瞭貫徹執行。道安在《阿毗曇序》中就記載瞭他堅持要譯者返工的事例。僧伽提婆和竺佛念曆時整整6個月譯畢《阿毗曇》，道安認為譯文“頗雜義辭，龍蛇同淵，金短共肆”，“深謂不可，遂令更齣”，結果二位譯者“夙夜匪懈”，又花瞭46晝夜“而得盡定。損可損者四捲焉”。刪去可刪的整整四捲，以“秦語十九萬五韆二百五十言”譯“梵本四十八萬二韆五百四言”，如果說道安對趙政、慧常的讓步顯示瞭他貫徹原則的靈活性，那他堅持其原則的原則性在此可見一斑。對那些不肯“斥重去復”的譯者（如慧常），“五失本”是一種策略，對那些“滅其繁長”無度的譯者（如竺佛念），“五失本”則為一種尺度。當年在長安譯場的一位同行目睹並記載下瞭掌握這一尺度的情況。這篇記載名為《僧伽羅刹集經後記》。全文不長，茲轉錄如下：
