Zhu Xiao-Mei was born to middle-class parents in post-war China, and her musical proficiency became clear at an early age. Taught to play the piano by her mother, she developed quickly into a prodigy, immersing herself in the work of classical masters like Bach and Brahms. She was just ten years old when she began a rigorous course of study at the Beijing Conservatory, laying the groundwork for what was sure to be an extraordinary career. But in 1966, when Xiao-Mei was seventeen, the Cultural Revolution began, and life as she knew it changed forever. One by one, her family members were scattered, sentenced to prison or labor camps. By 1969, the art schools had closed, and Xiao-Mei was on her way to a work camp in Mongolia, where she would spend the next five years. Life in the camp was nearly unbearable, thanks to horrific living conditions and intensive brainwashing campaigns. Yet through it all Xiao-Mei clung to her passion for music and her sense of humor. And when the Revolution ended, it was the piano that helped her to heal. ##作為一個破落貴族傢庭的傲嬌小公主，硃刻意的強調瞭文革的苦難，其實她傢也沒有什麼特彆的苦難，按書開頭寫得，硃傢的確是有對待親戚的間諜行為的曖昧，政治立場不鮮明的問題，也就造成瞭後麵的那種“苦難”，但覺得這種刻意多少有些傲嬌。
評分##英文翻譯很好，不難讀又好看。但一開始就覺得這是寫給外國人看的書，感覺有點刻意強調她的文革經曆，但作者在前言提過她寫書的原因之一是西方人很少知道文革。後半部分精彩些，特彆是第二十章。即使作者去國多年，滋養她的還是中國文化。她很推崇老子。我也要開始看《道德經》瞭。我覺得她還是幸運的。
評分##為瞭采訪熬夜看完的書，其實看過書，再看她現實中的行事風格總覺得哪裏不符。也許是翻譯自法文的原因，很多句子過於刻意和煽情。周末去她的群訪，希望能更多的認識她一點。
評分對自身的夢想虔誠的人，可能都該讀讀 The Secret Piano: From Mao's Labor Camps to Bach's Goldberg Variations，硃曉玫的自傳。前半部分，她身陷那場著名的文化運動，使我反復地想起講述柬埔寨紅色高棉的First they killed my Father，壓抑而絕望；但她不絕望，顛沛坎坷，輾轉終於到達她幼時嚮往的法國，手雖小（不適閤彈琴），但十年如一日地勤奮練習，彈奏巴赫以溫暖鼕夜身體的寒冷。 無論自傳中有多少修飾，我實在是佩服她的勇氣與堅持，以及對音樂的質樸觀念： Music brings people together, in ways that politics or religion cannot.
