Richard Bird takes a radically new approach to algorithm design, namely, design by calculation. These 30 short chapters each deal with a particular programming problem drawn from sources as diverse as games and puzzles, intriguing combinatorial tasks, and more familiar areas such as data compression and string matching. Each pearl starts with the statement of the problem expressed using the functional programming language Haskell, a powerful yet succinct language for capturing algorithmic ideas clearly and simply. The novel aspect of the book is that each solution is calculated from an initial formulation of the problem in Haskell by appealing to the laws of functional programming. 评分##用program calculation来证明算法正确性除了严谨性之外的一大好处是算法能起效的“核心思想”和边边角角的细节被分离了：细节就是那些很明显很常见的演算步骤，“核心思想”就是那些很奇特的步骤。有时甚至“核心思想”也被分解为一步一步有独立意义的部分。很期待日后能有教科书按这样的方式从零开始介绍（functional？）算法。
