內容簡介

　　丁文江（1887-1936），字在君，江蘇泰興人，1911年畢業於英國格拉斯哥大學（Glasgow University）地質係，一生以地質事業為己任。丁文江不僅是民國地質學的重要締造者，而且還為民國學界的乾纔，他曾任中國地質調查所所長、中央研究院總乾事等職。丁氏雖英年辭世，但仍不啻民國學術史上的重要人物。
　　丁文江一生交遊甚廣，與鬍適、翁文灝、傅斯年等都相知甚深。學界對於丁文江已有相當的理解和論述，傳記年譜以及文集均有麵世。然而，丁文江負笈英倫七年，是“一個歐化*深的中國人，一個科學化*深的中國人。”2他諳熟中西，其海外交遊網絡同樣廣闊，而這方麵的資料、文集麵世很少。
　　丁文江海外交遊人群大緻可以分為三類，一是在華工作的外國學者；二是來華考察的外國學者；三是外國駐華機構的代錶。丁文江的交遊在範圍上跨越地質學、考古學、人類學等。在時間上前期以英國為主，後期以美國為主。丁文江的交遊是民國學術國際閤作的一種重要模式，同時也可窺民國學術的國際網絡。

　　Please don't misunderstand me.The Geological Survey of China claims no monopoly of anykind.Nothing is more welcome， to me than that the scientific abroad begin to be more alive to theimmense possibilities of scientific discovery in China， and it has been the settle policy of the Surveyto do all that is in its power to help foreigners coming over here to work.Many Americans includingMr.Andrews himself will be able to substantiate this statement.We realize most clearly that China ispractically an unknown continent and the more people work at it the better known it will become.Butapart from the fact that Dr.Andersson and the Geological Survey have been working at the very sameproblems for the last two years， and that therefore in justice and fairness to them， their priority shouldbe taken into consideration， it is certainly in the interest of everybody as well as that of science toarrange cooperation and division of labor instead of undesirable competition.I may suggest a concreteexample to show what I mean.It is known that in northern China the Hipparion fauna dominates toa large extent but the country on the southern side of the Yangtze river， especially the southwesternprovinces， Yuanan and Szechuan， seems to have a different history.
