周宏涛与蒋介石家族为姻亲，但与蒋介石更为亲密的关系是，祖父周骏彦曾任奉化县龙津学堂学监时，正巧蒋介石正在此学习，与周骏彦有师生之谊。因为这层关系，与蒋纬国同岁的周宏涛幼时就与蒋介石有一面之缘。他就读东吴大学政经系，抗日军兴时转到武汉大学政治系继续就读，毕业后辗转进入蒋介石侍从室工作，担任侍从秘书，接替即将出国留学的俞国华。他侍从秘书的工作是为蒋介石把国外发来的电文译成中文，以及整理蒋下达的军政命令，再呈蒋签核，蒋介石认为需要特别补充的，即在手令上批示，深得蒋介石父子的信赖。他的叙述不可谓不准确。
