"The first fourteen years of her life all seemed the same. She had loved her sister without envy, her aunt without finding her coarse, her brother without pity. She was filled with a discontent, an anger about herself, her life, her family, that made her think she would never be content again." (page 35)(less)When I was a young elementary school reader, I avoided the heck out of Betsy Byars' books. I didn't care for the stories or the sad feelings that the books left me with. I found the plots packed with uncomfortable emotions and drawn out. And I still feel that way. As an adult reader, I can appreciate that Byars is able to write realistically about the emotions and feelings of frustrated tweens, though I continue to personally find the books unappealing.

Sara loves her brother, though she is troubled by his fixations and hates when her peers make fun of his disability. Swans from the nearby university have settled on the neighborhood pond and Sara takes her brother to visit the beautiful birds. That night, he awakens and wanders through the neighborhood, getting lost and scared while searching for the swans. Sara and her enemy-turned-helpful friend search the woods, finding Charlie, and returning him to a grateful community.
