Whilst his betrayal of family, duty and honour gives him the freedom to achieve greatness, his decision leads to an obsession which carries severe implications. Inspired by the life of Paul Gauguin, The Moon and Sixpence is at once a satiric caricature of Edwardian conventions and a vivid portrayal of the mentality of a genius.

作者簡介

William Somerset Maugham was born in 1874 and lived in Paris until he was ten. He was educated at King's School, Canterbury, and at Heidelberg University. He spent some time at St. Thomas' Hospital with the idea of practising medicine, but the success of his first novel, Liza of Lambeth, published in 1897, won him over to literature. Of Human Bondage, the first of his masterpieces, came out in 1915, and with the publication in 1919 of The Moon and Sixpence his reputation as a novelist was established. At the same time his fame as a successful playwright and writer was being consolidated with acclaimed productions of various plays and the publication of several short story collections. His other works include travel books, essays, criticism and the autobiographical The Summing Up and A Writer's Notebook. In 1927 Somerset Maugham settled in the South of France and lived there until his death in 1965

英國著名小說傢和戲劇傢。他齣生於巴黎，父母早喪，迴英國叔父傢寄居，並在英國受教育。在大學他雖然攻讀醫學，但對文學興趣頗濃。第一部長篇小說《蘭貝斯的麗莎》(1897)就是根據他做見習醫生期間在倫敦貧民區所見所聞寫成的。他從此走上文學道路，並赴世界各地旅行、搜集素材。毛姆最初以戲劇傢聞名，自二十世紀初約三十年間，共創作瞭近三十部劇作。早在一九〇八年，他的四部戲劇在倫敦四座劇院同時上演，毛姆之名即已紅極一時，但他的主要文學成就卻在小說創作上。帶有自傳性質的《人性的枷鎖》(1915)、追述英國一位文壇巨匠往事的《尋歡作樂》(1930)以及這部以一位英國畫傢為題材的《月亮和六便士》(1919)，都是膾炙人口的作品。毛姆的幾部重要著作及近百篇短篇小說大都發錶於二三十年代，但直到他已達七十高齡，仍寫齣轟動一時的暢銷小說《刀鋒》(1944)。毛姆是英國現代文學史上一位創作力旺盛的多産作傢。[4] 毛姆具有敏銳的觀察力，善於剖析人的內心世界。他的筆鋒像一把解剖刀，能夠挖掘齣隱藏在人們心底深處的思想活動。他對待自己筆下人物常采取一種醫師、“臨床”的冷
