　　和真正的人文主義者蘇格拉底相比，柏拉圖最大的局限在於對等級論的堅持。在他的理想國中，男性地位遠高於女性。試著想象他的理想國，難免不寒而栗：取消一夫一妻，實行妻子兒女公有化；為瞭種族純潔而實行殺嬰計劃；“奴隸恰如其分地受到鄙視”。另外，他認為“男人作為動物界中的最高等級，由諸神創造，其他物種是由其衰敗和退化發生的”，這種頗狂妄的觀念如何從遠古社會導齣？男人的優越性又有哪些例證？秉持曆史主義的柏拉圖帶著有色眼鏡看待曆史，所以他對於男女分工、男女對社會發展不同作用的論述難免有點偏頗，就好像帶著尋找玫瑰花的心理走到花叢，始終會聚焦於那些紅色花朵而未能全麵看到滿園春光。在構建理想國上，他認為最好的統治者是“哲學王”，因為他的思想超越群眾，直接和神進行交流，並根據神的指示復原最好的城邦。波普爾對哲學王建設城邦異議不多，但直接質疑：哲學王的繼承者如何生成，哲學王是否在於神交流外，可以妥善培養後繼者？讀過《理想國》的人必定記得，知識、音樂、體操是柏拉圖對培養人纔提齣的三大要素。知識的作用無需贅言；閤適的音樂可以激發人對於同類的善意；而城邦的保護者更需要的是對敵人的凶殘。柏拉圖認為體操可以培養到這點。他認為，嚮訓練狗一樣訓練城邦的保護者纔是明智的。他的許多措施，令人錯愕。若聯想修昔底德的“父道國傢”，這種呼應性確實引人深思。
