Hat, ribbon, bird, rose. To the people on the island, a disappeared thing no longer has any meaning. It can be burned in the garden, thrown in the river or handed over to the Memory Police. Soon enough, the island forgets it ever existed.
When a young novelist discovers that her editor is in danger of being taken away by the Memory Police, she desperately wants to save him. For some reason, he doesn’t forget, and it’s becoming increasingly difficult for him to hide his memories. Who knows what will vanish next?

##给三星是因为故事还能够带给我些思考。我不喜欢这本书的笔触，太碎了。大量的文字用来描绘不重要的细节，并没对整体起到什么作用。物体的消失也没有一个逻辑或节奏，整体看下来就是一个恋爱脑的姑娘取悦一个有妇之夫的故事。人物的构建都不够丰满，有种凭空出现，没有历史，没有根的感觉。当然，故事的走向也没什么未来了。但，它让我想到了鲁迅先生形容的那些麻木的人。当人们习惯了失去，又终将死亡，一切又有什么意义。当你感受不到拥有，有没有都没什么关系。还是挺悲哀的。

评分3-/5 My first foray into Ogawa's oeuvre left me with a sour feeling that I didn't fully understand what she is trying to achieve with this novel. The book deals with totalitarianism and the philosophical meaning of human existence, yet the writing is too languid to carry the story with force, not to mention the deeply flawed plotting.
