The 100-year-old Doll family—beautifully crafted china dolls passed down through four generations of girls in one American family—meet their new neighbors, the Funcrafts, a doll family made completely of plastic and delivered straight from the factory shelves.

Annabelle Doll is eight years old—she has been for over a hundred years. Not a lot has happened to her, cooped up in the dollhouse, with the same doll people, day after day, year after year…until the Funcrafts move in. Now Annabelle has a friend. Sure she's made entirely of plastic and she's living in the scariest room in the house, but she's an adventurer, and after a hundred years of boredom, that's just what Annabelle needs.

作者簡介

Ann Matthews Martin (born August 12, 1955) is an acclaimed American children's author.

Ann Martin grew up in Princeton, New Jersey with her parents and her younger sister, Jane. After graduating from Smith College, Martin became a teacher and then an editor of children's books; she is now a full-time writer. Martin finds the ideas for her books from many different sources: some are based on personal experiences, while others are based on childhood memories and feelings. Many are about contemporary problems or events. All of Ann's characters, including the members of The Baby-Sitters Club, are fictional, but many of her characters are based on real people. Sometimes Ann names her characters after people she knows, and other times she simply chooses names that she likes[citation needed].

Martin has always enjoyed writing. Even before she was old enough to write, she would dictate stories to her mother to write down for her. Some of her favorite authors at that time were Lewis Carroll, P. L. Travers, Hugh Lofting, Astrid Lindgren, and Roald Dahl. They inspired her to become a writer herself.

Since ending The Baby-Sitters Club series in 2000, Martin’s writing has concentrated on single novels, many of which are set in the 1960s. In 2010, Martin published a prequel to The Baby-Sitters Club series titled The Summer Before.

After living in New York City for many years, Martin moved to the Hudson Valley in upstate New York where she now lives with her dog, Sadie, and her cats, Gussie, Pippen, and Woody. Her hobbies are reading, sewing, and needlework. Her favorite thing to do is to make clothes for children. According to the biographical blurb in the back of The Baby-Sitters Club books, she "likes ice cream and I Love Lucy and hates to cook".

In 1990, she created the Ann M. Martin Foundation, which provides grants to causes benefiting children, education/literacy programs, and homeless people and animals.

精彩書評

"This novel, named a PW Best Book of 2000, introduces the Doll family, who has lived in the same dollhouse, in the same room of a family's home for 100 years. "The authors provide plenty of action and suspense, but it is their skillfully crafted details about the dolls' personalities and daily routines that prove most memorable. A fun-filled adventure free from nostalgia," wrote PW in a starred review."
-- Publishers Weekly

"When dolls Annabelle and Tiffany are inadvertently carried to another household, they come up against Mean Mimi, a bullying princess who rides roughshod over the toys in her realm. Superbly nuanced drawings echo the action that breathes life into these extraordinary playthings."
-- School Library Journal
