Oxford University Press (OUP) is the largest university press in the world. It is a department of the University of Oxford and is governed by a group of 15 academics appointed by the Vice-Chancellor known as the Delegates of the Press. 對口袋書沒有完全準確的界定，大抵是指開本小於小32開，印張大緻不超過10個印張的書。口袋書的興起，最早可以追溯到1935年7月在倫敦齣版的“企鵝叢書”，這套叢書3年間銷售2500多萬冊，獲得巨大成功。口袋書從此流行於世並引發瞭一場“紙皮書革命”，對歐美國傢的齣版業産生瞭深遠的影響，甚至與美國發明柯達剋羅姆彩色膠片一起列入20世紀的人類發明、人類冒險和不尋常的事件當中。

紙的齣現，約在西漢時期，史書正式的紀錄是公元一○五年。由於紙張具有輕柔及低廉的長處，因而，很快的成為生産圖書最主要的材料。紙齣現以後，雖然解決瞭圖書生産方麵的許多問題，但是生産圖書，猶停留在逐字逐本的抄寫，既費時又費力，還是欠缺方便。人們遂從長期使用印章和捶拓碑碣文字的經驗中，啓發瞭雕版與印刷技術的結閤使用，便捷快速的生産圖書方法，終於發明。以古法示範造紙過程。

雕版印刷術約在初、盛唐時代齣現，由於它是手工業時代生産圖書的好方法，因此很快被推廣利用，成為五代、兩宋以後生産圖書的主力。為瞭使印刷技術更便捷與美觀，宋仁宗慶曆年間（公元一○四一～一○四八）又有人發明活字排版印刷。而元朝末年，更進步到彩色套印的印刷領域。從此之後，印刷技術不但成熟周全，印刷成品更是鮮麗動人。
