全书以名为“自由女性”的第三人称中篇叙述为框架。该故事分为五个小节，讲述安娜及其女友莫莉的生活和事业，每两节之间夹有一连串所谓的“笔记集”，其内容取自安娜的四个笔记本（即黑色，红色，黄色和蓝色四本），如此反复四次，在最后一节“自由女性”之前还插入了一个独立的“金色笔记”部分。其中黑色笔记本中记载着安娜年轻时在非洲的主活，特别是她在当地一个左翼小团体中的活动，以及因此历经的幻想、激情与失望。她的第一部小说《违禁的爱情》就是这段生活的产物。
