Sabine Hossenfelder has grown up in Frankfurt, Germany. She has a PhD in physics from the University of Frankfurt. Since 2006 she has written the popular weblog Backreaction. Her writing has been published, among others, in Scientific American, New Scientist, NOVA, Aeon, Nautilus, and Quanta Magazine.
Sabine is presently a Research Fellow at the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies. Her first book "Lost in Math: How Beauty Leads Physics Astray" was published by Basic Books in June 2018.
A contrarian argues that modern physicists' obsession with beauty has given us wonderful math but bad science
Whether pondering black holes or predicting discoveries at CERN, physicists believe the best theories are beautiful, natural, and elegant, and this standard separates popular theories from disposable ones. This is why, Sabine Hossenfelder argues, we have not seen a major breakthrough in the foundations of physics for more than four decades. The belief in beauty has become so dogmatic that it now conflicts with scientific objectivity: observation has been unable to confirm mindboggling theories, like supersymmetry or grand unification, invented by physicists based on aesthetic criteria. Worse, these "too good to not be true" theories are actually untestable and they have left the field in a cul-de-sac. To escape, physicists must rethink their methods. Only by embracing reality as it is can science discover the truth.

评分##几乎全面地介绍了现代基础物理学的每一个前沿和每一处碰壁。作者采访了Nima，Weinberg等一众活跃的厉害的物理学家，为了质疑对美和优雅的追求究竟能不能成为物理学研究的信条，也探讨了学术界的团体化，认知偏差等人类本性是不是对科学研究造成了影响。但是说到底，都是因为我们缺新发现。虽然作者的批评和警示在我看来没有特别大的建设性，但是这本书比目前畅销的科普书所展示的物理学要真实多了。挺希望被翻译成中文的。作者是研究量子引力的科学家，也是一位油管科普up主。

评分##初看题目觉得是在黑string，其实作者指的范围更大，是物理学里到底对美的追求该占多大作用。反正我喜欢数学和理论物理，主要是因为那些美的东西能激起内心的热情，若是都是很繁琐的计算，怕也提不起兴趣。说到底这个还是个人选择吧。另外还是觉得即使从物理学本身来讲追求美并没有错，只是需要更多审美的角度吧，才不至于死在一条路上，而对一个人来说，lost in math何尝不是一件幸事呢
