Betsy Cromer Byars (born August 7, 1928) is an American author of children's books. Her novel Summer of the Swans won the 1971 Newbery Medal. She has also received a National Book Award, for The Night Swimmers (1980), and an Edgar Award, for Wanted...Mud Blossom (1991).

Byars has been called "one of the ten best writers for children in the world" by Nancy Chambers, editor of the British literary journal Signal, and in 1987 Byars received the Regina Medal for lifetime achievement from the Catholic Library Association. Due to the popularity of her books with children, she has also been listed as one of the Educational Paperback Association's top 100 authors.

"The longest day in the life of a 14-year-old girl--the summer day her loved, mentally retarded brother is lost, the day she discovers compassion is a friend. A compelling story."
--Publishers Weekly. Newbery Award Book.

The character of Sara is what I think makes this book so interesting. Sara is the older sister of Charlie and thus carries characteristics such as: hard working, opinionated, and truly defiant at some moments. Through the story, Sara struggles with her self esteem for her legs are too skinny, or her feet are too big. Sara looks up to her older sister and wishes that she was as beautiful as she is. The reader really picks up on the fact that Sara is not confident with herself. After Charlie goes missing, Sara's defiance begins to lessen and thus turning her life into a new perspective. I love how the author's message is "don't sweat the small stuff" because there are bigger thing
