作者简介

Betsy Cromer Byars (born August 7, 1928) is an American author of children's books. Her novel Summer of the Swans won the 1971 Newbery Medal. She has also received a National Book Award, for The Night Swimmers (1980), and an Edgar Award, for Wanted...Mud Blossom (1991).

Byars has been called "one of the ten best writers for children in the world" by Nancy Chambers, editor of the British literary journal Signal, and in 1987 Byars received the Regina Medal for lifetime achievement from the Catholic Library Association. Due to the popularity of her books with children, she has also been listed as one of the Educational Paperback Association's top 100 authors.

听书也是一个人的阅读史中很重要的一页。固然，很多知识是可以从电视、从交谈、从观察、从生活中的各种渠道获得，但就深度来说，没有任何一种形式能够代替阅读。读书的速度是可快可慢的，书的内容也可以自由挑选，这比其他吸收知识的形式多了许多思考的空间，主动性更强。读的时候还可以提问、讲解，还可以有目的地查阅，这样使得一段文字的扩展性非常大。也许它只是一个引子，由它引发的探讨和追问，最后可能把人带到完全不能想象的地方。

此外，很多老少皆宜的经典也不曾被我放过：达尔作品集，哈利波特七部，纳尼亚传奇七部，奇幻精灵事件簿，神奇树屋，星球大战六部，墨水心三部曲，绿山墙的安妮全集，草原上的小木屋全集，乃至浩如烟海的托尔金集全套，包括指环王三部曲、霍比特人及其他中土小说，这类书或许很多她未必会喜欢，也不一定能读懂，但我只希望能让她有挑战自己和阅读经典的勇气，兴趣第一才是关键。

The Summer of the Swans is a contemporary realistic fiction novel that tells us the story about a girl named Sara and her brother Charlie, whom live with their Aunt Willie because their mother passed away and their father figure has left. Charlie is young boy who is mentally disabled and does not talk. Sara guards Charlie and will do anything for Charlie. She is thrown into a tizzy when her brother goes missing. She is very defiant and willing to do anything to find her brother.

这类书我是从澳大利亚的一个儿童文学经典丛书开始的，以《鲁滨逊漂流记》《彼得潘》《格列佛游记》等古典经典为主；之后是E.B.怀特的三部曲：《夏洛的网》《精灵鼠小弟》《吹小号的天鹅》，后来开始主攻纽伯瑞获奖作品，分别拿下了puffin、yearling、Harper等几个儿童文学的系列，像《小熊维尼》《长袜子皮皮》《仙境之桥》等都在其内，甚至还收了sandpiper两个的纽伯瑞金奖、银奖套装。
