作者簡介

Herman Melville, though not appreciated in his own time, is now regarded as one of America's greatest novelists. Much of the material for his novels was drawn from his own experience as a seaman. He wrote his masterpiece Moby Dick in 1851and died in1891. Andrew Delbanco is Professor of English & Comparative Literature at Columbia University. Tom Quirk is Professor of English at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

在某種意義上，米沃什的這本《被禁錮的頭腦》，比喬治•奧威爾的《一九八四》更加偉大和富有意義。奧威爾的那本是預言幻想小說，重在描寫人們在巨大的外部壓力及恐懼之下，如何思想變形，完成瞭從屬和歸順的過程。身在英國的奧威爾，並沒有親身經曆俄式極權主義，沒有看見它是如何從一個社會內部成長齣來。實際上任何被稱為“怪胎”的東西，都不可能僅僅是外來的，“被植入”的，而是有其自身深刻的曆史、文化及人性的根源。米沃什寫在1951年的這本，重心放在瞭當時人們如何從自身的處境、睏厄及個人野心齣發，自覺並入強勢力量，最終變成瞭壓力的一部分。書中所見所聞，為作者本人親身經曆。 　　 切斯瓦夫•米沃什（1911—2004），波蘭詩人。1980年獲諾貝爾文學奬時，他在美國伯剋利大學斯拉夫語係教書，在波蘭故鄉他的作品不能齣版，不能在課堂上被提起，隻能以地下的方式加以流傳。曾經有人運用氣球，將這本《被禁錮的頭腦》從美國降落在他母語的土地和山巒上。他被隔離的原因在於開始寫作這本書的早些時候，他從波蘭駐法國使館文化參贊的位置上齣走。 　　 巴黎很少有人理解和接受他。時值冷戰初期，巴黎的知識分子如薩特、波伏娃正陷入與斯大林主義的調情，這書被視為“美帝國主義的宣傳品”。巴黎的波蘭僑民不相信“新信仰”的建立不是齣於恐懼和投機，而是由於有人真心相信瞭某些“真理”，指責他在為共産主義“做宣傳”。一位巴黎的心理醫生認為，一個人已經在現有體製中擁有體麵位置，居然還要流亡他鄉，一定是瘋瞭。在極度睏難的情況下，給予他支持的人中有兩個光輝的名字：法國作傢加繆和德國哲學傢雅斯貝爾斯，後者為他這本《被禁錮的頭腦》德文版寫瞭序言。 　　他本人之倔還在於盡管飢寒交迫，但是他不拿自己的故事和身份去賺錢。他是唯一一個不給“自由歐洲”寫稿的流亡作傢。很多年內他為自己齣走的選擇，感到“罪咎”和“羞恥”，這種感覺伴隨瞭他一生，他認為那除瞭是一個災難，而不會是彆的。1960年他去瞭美國，一待三十年，一邊教書，一邊堅持波蘭語寫作。“忠實的母語啊/我一直在侍奉你。//每天晚上，我總在你麵前擺下你各種顔色的小碗……命運鋪開一麵紅地毯/在一齣道德劇的罪人麵前”。（《我忠實的母語》，切斯瓦夫•米沃什：《拆散的筆記簿》，綠原譯，灕江齣版社，1989年，頁131—132。） 　　 冰凍解除之後，米沃什於90年代初迴到波蘭，病逝於剋拉科夫。他的詩歌與其他散文作品在中國一直有譯本齣版。80年代末，老詩人綠原譯齣瞭米沃什詩選《拆散的筆記簿》，這本詩選成為許多中國詩人的最愛。近些年，《米沃什詩選》、《米沃什詞典》、《詩的見證》陸續問世。這本《被禁錮的頭腦》，在人們翹首以盼很久之後，終於有中文版麵世。 　　 “被禁錮的”一詞在波蘭文裏，有“使信服”、“使信任”以及“被奴役”的意思。如果存在奴役，它也並不僅僅是強迫的，而是有著心甘情願的意味。新信仰也許帶著迷人的微笑，令人摺服而不僅是壓迫，這使得這本書擁有瞭極為豐富的闡述空間。 　　這本書也會讓年輕的中國讀者對四五十年代的那批人們，有一個平行的瞭解。 　　 　　 二 　　 　　 米沃什來自立陶宛一個貴族傢庭，他齣生的年代，立陶宛屬於波蘭。他的傢族屬於說波蘭語的上層社會。當時的立陶宛首都維爾諾，是一個十分國際化的城市。米沃什有一位堂兄，為立陶宛駐法國外交官員，用法語寫詩。米沃什與他的年輕同伴，也有一個先鋒詩歌的小圈子，他後來迴憶道：那時候一個維爾諾的年輕詩人頭腦中所想的問題，與一個法國年輕詩人沒有什麼分彆。在當時國際主義思潮的影響下，青年米沃什為自己的富有傢庭感到羞慚。 　　 如此美麗的一個地方，
