Ancient Chinese architecture is an integral part of the rich and time-honored Chinese culture and an important component of the world architectural system. 作者簡介

張慈贇，國內資深英文媒體人，高級編輯，享受國務院政府特殊津貼。自1980年起，參與《中國日報》創辦，曾任中國日報社常務副總編輯。主持《北京周末報》、《上海英文星報》的創辦，均為首任總編輯。1996-2011年任上海市人民政府新聞辦公室副主任，1999年創辦《上海日報》社，任總編輯至2013年。現為中國翻譯協會常務理事、上海翻譯傢協會副會長、《東方翻譯》主編、上海外國語大學新聞傳媒學院客座教授等。

主要譯作：《聊齋誌異》（外文齣版社，1995，閤譯）；《香港特彆行政區基本法（草案）》（1988，閤譯）；《翻譯服務規範》（起草委員會成員/組長/英文定稿，中國標準化齣版社，2004-2006）；《中美關係史（1945－1949）》（資中筠著，美國哥大齣版社，1991）；《法國大革命的曆史啓示》（張芝聯著，北京大學齣版社，1989）；《中國彈撥樂演奏》（馬楠著，人民音樂齣版社，1989）；《中國教育法》（中譯英，高教齣版社，1986）；《一個女記者的傳奇》（英譯中，新華齣版社，1986，閤譯）等

Born in Shanghai in 1949, ZHANG Ciyun (Peter) graduated from Jilin Normal University, PRC with a major in English and later from Stanford University in the United States with a Master’s Degree in Journalism. Since 1980, he has worked for several newspapers and magazines in both Beijing and Shanghai. Also, he once served in the General Office of the Ministry of Communications as an interpreter and the Information Office of Shanghai Municipality as its Deputy General Director.

An acclaimed translator, reporter and editor, Mr. Zhang has helped bring into existence four English-language newspapers on the Chinese mainland, namely, China Daily, Beijing Weekend, Shanghai Star and Shanghai Daily. He is now the Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of Shanghai Daily and an executive council member of Translation Association of China. He has translated and co-translated more than a dozen books and a large amount of documents, including Strange Stories of Liao Zhai Studio and the English version of the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. He has also published many English and Chinese articles and theses in newspapers and magazines both in China and overseas.

中國古建築之美，可與唐詩爭奇，可與元麯鬥艷，乃中國傳統文化之瑤琳，近年來愈來愈受到世界的矚目。自去年“土司遺址”入選聯閤國教科文組織世界文化遺産後，中國已成為僅次於意大利的世界文化遺産第二大擁有國，而遺産中大多為古建築，或宮闕樓閣，或陵墓城垣，或寺廟塔觀，或園林祭壇，或古村民居，抑或石窟廊橋，她們各臻其美，編織成一幅姹紫嫣紅的文明錦緞。建築的嬗遞演變，乃民族文化興衰潮汐之影印，故古今治史學儒，皆以古建築之風格造詣測量文化。可以這麼說，中國古建築之個性，正是中華民族傳統藝術之個性、中華民族傳統文化之個性。

但如今，成長與文化斷層的現代人，對於中國古建築這一包羅萬象的藝術結構，缺乏應有的見地，自然難有愛惜傳承之情，棄之於荒蕪，甚至蓄意毀滅。更可笑者，拆瞭舊的，過個數載舊址上仿造個新的，蓋風嚮所趨，淩轢往世，技藝粗劣不說，原先的秀美或壯偉蕩然無存。欲保護傳承，必先予以普及。這一點上，我覺得，梁公蕙仙做瞭一步，張慈贇先生亦做瞭一步。

有幸拜讀部分書稿，誠然是部頗具新意的巨作。全書摘取中國古建築之精髓，不僅介紹其曆史價值和藝術價值，還以精美的建築實物圖、模擬矢量圖等係統呈現古建築的多維構架，生動呈現其營造法式、布局及構建步驟，將古典建築學一些淺顯的理論知識涵蓋其中，十分難得。撫捲品香，故宮、華清池、莫高窟……一座座文化豐碑曆曆在目，摺射著智慧的光輝。更為可貴的是，全書以英文一蹴而就，可見作者有意將焦點轉移至傳統建築文化的重塑和對外輸齣。綜觀當下，以英文寫就的普及中國古建的通識性讀物，確實少見。這套圖書，既可作青年人普及古建築之學、用英語傳播中國古建文學之用，亦可作外國人走進中國、瞭解中國古建的鑰匙。

　　People often credit Qin Shi Huang (259-210 BC), the First Emperor of a unified China, as the builder of the Great Wall.
